Fifty-nine players competed in the Spring Open, held Mar. 31-Apr. 1 at the Texas TNI. IM Daniel Fernandez, a student at UT-Brownsville, won the Open section with 4 points and received $200. NM Selby Anderson was clear second ($100) with 3-1, losing in the last round to Fernandez. Tied at 2.5 were Shawn Noland, Jesse Lozano, Randall Schwarz, Daniel Hung and Fernando Spada, splitting U2200 and U2000 prizes to win $30 each.
In the Reserve, Michael Croyle (ranked tenth with a 1556 rating) won first prize of $100 with a perfect score, 4-0. Steven Chen and Paul Webb tied with 3.5, splitting the second plus U1600 prizes and each receiving $75. Fernando Spada, Sr. won the U1400 prize of $50 with 3 points, and Jovan Whatford won the unrated prize of $50 with 1.5. Quintin Nowland won the $5 upset prize (generously provided by someone with a cell phone) with an amazing 973 point upset.
